Project name: Recruiting & Retaining Health Care Professionals in Rural Communities
Nature of the on-going research: While approximately 20 percent of the United States population lives in rural areas, only 9 percent of physicians practice there. Physicians consistently and preferentially settle in metropolitan, suburban, and other non-rural areas (Geyman et al., 2000). The purpose of this study is to examine the workforce demands of small rural hospitals and the role of housing in employee recruitment and retention.
How could a student participate: Data from Critical Access Hospitals located in rural areas is being collected. A student involved in the project could assist in developing survey procedures. He or she could include questions in the survey and conduct a small research project in conjunction with the overall study. Alternatively, a student could work on the data analysis and mapping projects that compliment the larger project.
