Dress & Sport for Women Symposium
Dr. Patricia Campbell Warner, Professor emerita, history of dress, Department of Theater, University of Massachusetts Amherst. Warner is the author of When the Girls Came Out to Play: The Birth of American Sportswear.
• In the Twenty-first Century, we take sportswear for
granted.
• We all wear it.
• But why “SPORTS wear”?
• What is its relationship to sport?
• Where did it come from?
• What struggles did women face in order to play sports, to
wear clothing that allowed them freedom of movement in a
fashion-driven world?
• What relationship do sports have to the clothing that
defines American Style?
